The Origin of Silence Implies Consent

My brother teased me for watching a fair bit of TV during our younger years. Did he know that, among other films, I watched A Man for All Seasons and developed from this scene my personal philosophy of speaking up in the face of intolerance and dysfunction? My takeaway from the climactic courtroom scene: if I ever sit silently while someone is telling a racist joke or talking bad about another, everyone must assume that I agree with the speaker. I’m grateful I learned this early, even if it was from an old movie.
